Alternator Brushes w/ Holders (twin pack)

Alternator Brushes w/ Holders (twin pack)
New set of alternator brushes (A & B brush set with base holders)

As many CBX owners probably already know, the CBX likes to have these replaced every 12,000-15,000 miles on the average. Thankfully, it's a relatively easy job to perform! Keep a spare set taped to the back or your side'll be happy you did!

HISTORY DETAILS: The CBX was given an automotive type alternator, compared to the basic motorcycle 3-phase "total loss" system. The Silver and Gold-Wings of the same period had a 3-phase system with permanent magnet rotor, and the "fixed" coils for power.

The CBX's alternator is unique in that the armature is on the side (cocentric) radius, compared to a pair of axial rings. The downside of this is that the "swept area" for the contacts is a much longer path, which eats the brushes (especially the outside brush).

Since the alternator spins off the "jackshaft", and the crank has no real flywheel, the engine can accelerate through its speed range faster than the little alternator is happy with. Irimajiri designed the cool slip-plate clutch ("A" & "B" metal plates) into the alternator shaft, allowing the alternator to catch up to the crankshaft, rather than snapping its shaft. (Sometimes you might hear the sound as if you were operating a rachet wrench driver back and forth)...normal!

Since the alternator could fail either by worn brushes, or a slipping clutch, the voltmeter became a standard device for our X's.
